Undergraduate

Considering attending UM and majoring in journalism? We'd be happy to meet with you, give you a tour of Don Anderson Hall, and tell you more about our award-winning program.

If you're planning a campus visit, let the admissions office know that you'd like to meet with a journalism representative. You can sign up for UM Days or a campus visit on the Admissions website.

Here at the J-School, all students begin by getting a basic background in:

  • Reporting & writing
  • Audio stories
  • Photojournalism
  • Broadcast video & production
  • Media history & literacy

We also want you to take a lot of classes around campus, so you have a broad liberal arts education. Many of our students have double majors or have a major and a minor field of study.

Our Professional Program covers the final two years of study here. Students have a choice in the kinds of classes they want to take. You can be a generalist in the changing world of journalism, or you can specialize in:

  • Reporting & writing
  • TV anchoring, producing & directing
  • Video & multimedia storytelling/photojournalism
  • Hosting & producing radio programs
  • Online & documentary work

Students have lots of opportunities to work while here.

  • Apply to report, edit, design or shoot for the independent student newspaper, the Montana Kaimin.
  • Produce and announce for the independent study radio station, KBGA.
  • Apply for student positions with Montana public radio and Montana public television in UM’s Broadcast Media Center.
