J-school pitches in on Debate Night

While candidates for Montana's lone congressional seat debated in Tuesday’s statewide television broadcast, UM journalism students and faculty worked hard behind the scenes to help it make it happen.

Graduate students Emily Wendler and Kate Walker joined undergrads Daniel Erusha, Conor Ballantyne, LeRoy Menahan, Eric Brown, Duane Roeder and Cody Proctor on the Montana PBS production team. Professors Ray Fanning and Ray Ekness and adjunct professor Alison Perkins filled producing and directing roles.

Meanwhile, students in this fall’s Covering Elections class scurried to fact-check candidate statements. The team included Alexandra Schwier, Allison Connell, Brooks Johnson, Patrick Record, Candace Rojo and Keele Smith, with an assist from law student Allie Harrison. Professors Lee Banville and Dennis Swibold and adjunct professor Alison Perkins supervised that work.

Journalism students and faculty will be back on the job next month as part of Montana PBS’s coverage of debates featuring candidates for the U.S. Senate (Monday, Oct. 8) and for governor (Wednesday, Oct. 10).
