Name: Paul Bergen-Henengouwen
Year of Graduation: 1993
Job Title: News Director at KBMT-TV in Beaumont, Texas.
What you do: I lead a news staff of 30 who excel in terms of content, production value and growth in a competitive television news market.
Best thing about your job: Watching employees grow and advance, day-to-day adrenaline rush of deadlines, winning the big story and having a staff who enjoys coming to work.
What you’re most proud of: The staff who have gone on to bigger and better markets.
Best memory of UM: The UM campus is beautiful; and the school pride is something not found in very many places.
Best memory of the J-School or RTV Department: The Student Documentary Unit and accomplishing a goal as a team.
Advice you have for current students: Work as hard as you can to get as much practical experience prior to graduation. Also – don’t burn bridges. This industry is incredibly tight and what you do in one market will follow you for the rest of your career.
Anything else you’d like to add: A special thanks to my instructors and professors who still occasionally provide sound advice and whose friendship will always be treasured.
